The WIT-III presentations were focused on:(1) solving relatively subtle problems of ichnotaxonomy, for example by testing seldom used ichnotaxobases;(2)demonstrating transitional examples between groups of ichnofossils; 3) describing quite new ichnofossil problems and possible ichnotaxonomic solutions. The three following topics were related to bioerosion: Veronica Kushlina presented the study on biting traces made on echinoderm skeletons in the lower Middle Ordovician; she suggested a possible tracemaker and agreed with the necessity of ichnotaxonomic treatment of these traces. Richard Bromley and Kurt Nielsen pointed out that borings in hard substrates are effectively "prefossilized" and therefore proposed that lithic borings (in rock and skeletal material) be considered as fossilized on the death of the tracemaker. Though this wording did not meet a general consensus, it was recognized that the definition of "fossil" can be different for borings and for soft-substrate trace fossils.
