   The drainage basin of the Souš reservoir in the Czech Jizerské Hory is characterized by acidification and advanced deforestation. The damage to the forest is a result of atmospheric deposition of acid compounds. The object of this survey is to detect atmospherically deposited heavy metals in the reservoir sediment. Fourteen grab samples and 4 cores, recovered by a gravity corer, were obtained from the lacustrine sediment. The concentration of the heavy metals Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured. While there are high atmospheric deposits of Cd, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn, applying the so-called index of geoaccumulation (Igeo) shows that the reservoir sediment is strongly polluted with Cd, moderately to strongly polluted with Pb and unpolluted to moderately polluted with Zn. Limy sediment, probably deriving from soil-liming at the end of the eighties, was found at two sampling locations. In these limy samples, we found the highest Cd- and Zn-concentration, but the lowest Pb.
   With the exception of elevated Mn-concentrations in the limy samples Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni have not accumulated in the reservoir sediment. With the data of the heavy metal wet deposition at the Souš climatic station, which are available from a publication of the Czech Hydrometeorological Survey (CHMU), a balance-sheet between heavy metal input in the drainage basin by wet deposition and ouput by dissolved heavy metal loads of the reservoir outflow is presented. In this calculation only the input of the heavy metals Cd, Pb and Zn, which are accumulated in the reservoir sediment, exceeds the corresponding output. This serves as evidence for the atmospheric source of the contamination for the atmospheric source of the contamination. Fe, Mn and also Zn as opposed to Cd and Pb stay in solution and are transported through the reservoir.
   The survey of the Souš reservoir indicates that in the middle European zone of acute deforestation a potential danger level in the sediment of surface waters within an acidified drainage basin can arise only by way of atmospheric deposition, with distinction between certain heavy metals because of different solubility under given hydrochemical conditions
