The present article treats of the nature of species extinctions which have taken place in the fossil record and, in more detail, causes of them. A hypothesis is presented that the planetary evolutionary process, including extinction events, is governed by developmental principles. Ageing is one of them. The patterns of life histories and extinctions of trilobites and dinosaurs are briefly discussed as an example of a universal rule. From an evolutionary perspective, it seems to be clear that extinctions have no single or simple cause. Regarding the mechanisms of extinctions in general, it is concluded that species extinctions are not solely a refpelction of external (extrinsic) factors (e.g. impacts, volcanism, floods, competition, etc.) but also depend on internal (intrinsic) factors (e.g. longevity of individuals, population size, body size, etc.).
Many recent evolutionary paleontologists have infused people with the need of purely catastrophic explanations, however, they have perhaps drawn us a bit too far from the real nature of extinctions. The developmental approach on a planetary scale reveals that the extinction processes in the history of the Earth do involve the puzzling phenomenon of ageing in species and higher taxa, planetary biological megarythms, as well as the extraterrestrial influences themselves
