Abstrakt (anglicky)
   The exclusion of acid precipitation in whole-catchment experiments can provide valuable information to further our understanding of recovery processes of acidified soils. In this study we focused on the reversibility of acidification-induced changes in the soil solution in different soil horizons as measured by suction lysimeters and centrifugation. Sulfate concentrations in the uppermost horizons, i.e. the O and E horizons, responded rapidly to the decreased input, and lower concentrations were found within some months after the treatment was initiated. In the Bs horizon, the SO4, concentrations decreased more gradually, being between 20 and 50% of pre-treatment levels in 1993, after 2.5 years of treatment. In 1993, lower concentrations of Al were found in the soil solution. The most pronounced decrease compared to the pre-treatment period was detected in lysimeters 35 m upstream.
   Higher pH values in the soil solution in 1993 coincided with a decrease in the total ion concentrations was also observed in the soil solution during the treatment period. These changes are described to both a reduced input of sea salts and to reduced sulfate concentrations in the soil solution. So far, the acid exclusion experiment at Gardsjön shows that some changes in the soil solution chemistry can be achieved after a relatively short time period
