A graptolite assemblage indicative of the basal Silurian P. acuminatus Biozone has been identified in two localities of the Barrancos region (South Portugal), within the Ossa Morena Zone of the Hesperian Massif. It represents the first record of this biozone in Portugal and the third one in the whole Iberian Peninsula. Identified taxa include Parakidograptus acuminatus, Normalograptus trifilis, N. medius, N. angustus, Cystograptus ancestralis and Neodiplograptus cf.lanceolatus. Owing to the presence of N.trifilis, the assemblage may be referred to about the middle part of the P. acuminatus Biozone. The graptolites were recorded at the base of a black-shale sequence with remarkable lyditic intercalations in its lower part (the "Xistos com Nódulos" Formation), which overlies barren quartzites of supposed Ordovician age (Colorada Formation). The new biostratigraphic data prove Ordovician-Silurian transition in this region of the Ossa Morena Zone.
Both the graptolite assemblages, thickness of the P. acuminatus Biozone, and the facies development of the earliest Silurian of the Barrancos region can be well compared with coeval sections throughout the whole peri-Gondwanan Europe
