   This study presents new insight into the fracture development of granites at depths greater than 7 km, as demonstrated in the South Bohemian Pluton (SBP) by joint fractography and comparison with experiments and geological data. the origin of joint in the Mrákotín granite, one subtype of the Variscan SBP, was examined. The NNe-joint sets (among others) of this pluton are persistent in their orientation over a distance of 150 km and represent an early fracture system. A selected fracture zone for our analysis consists of nine NNE-joints (025ř trend) with interacting multiple mirros, hackle and en echelor fringers, as well as possible branching initiation. With one exception, all mirrors have similar ratios of long to short axes, ranging from 3.3 to 4.5. However, this ration is reduced to 1.3 to 1.4 for the full joints (combined mirrors and maximum widths of the fringes) reflecting the joint driving energy.
