   Different marble types have been used as building stones for the Marmorpalais in Postdam (Germany). Some of these marbles show pronounced degradation and have to be replaced. The grain fabric and lattice preferred orientation (texture) of the individual marble types were investigated in order to determine constraints for their proneness to weathering. To characterize weathering phenomena, weathered marbles from the Marmorpalais and fresh marble substitutes from Poland, the Czech Republic and Italy were compared. The respective marbles show distinct differences in average grain size, grain boundary geometry and texture. The Priborn marble (Przeworna, Poland) shows straight grain boudaries and a very strong texture, while the marbles from Kauffung (Wojcieszow, Poland), Lindewiese (Lipova, Czech Republic) and Grosskunzendorf (Slawniovice, Poland) have iregular grain boundaries and a moderate to strong texture.
   In contrast, the carrara marble (Italy) exhibits a weak texture and the grain boundary geometric differ in a wide range. The mean grain size of the samples ranges from 0.07 mm to 1.5 mm. In all samples a grain shape preferred orientation can be observed. However, there is no unique relationship between the grain fabric and the corresponding texture of the marbles. For some of the samples the grain fabric was quantified by means of a digital image analysis. This procedure allows a better comparison between the samples and a correlation with other parameters (e.g. mechanical strength). Cathodoluminiscence investigations reveal additional structural features like healed microcracks or open grain boudaries. the latte ones are indicated by their high luminiscence in the weathered Priborn and Carrara marbles. The results indicate that the different types of marble weathering (e.g.
   powdering, break outs) are specifically triggered by certain grain fabrics and textures and their combinations, respectively. due to the great variety of such combination in the samples investigated, these samples are well suited for more detailed investigations on the influence of fabric on the observed weathering phenomena
