Abstrakt (anglicky)
Based on the commented modern editions of Goethes's scientific writings, the role of clay minerals in these writings is analysed. It is shown that - although a detailed analysis is not available yet - certain aspects of clay mineralogy play a prominent role in Goethe's thinking and in his scientific writings. Goethe's scattered notes and apercues concerning clays are classified into four thematic aspects: the mineralogial apsect (classification, formation and origin of kaolin and other clays), the geological and petrological aspect (occurrence of kaolin and other clays), the thermomechanical or physico-chemical aspect (behaviour of kaolin and argillaceous rocks exposed to heating, structure formation), and the technological or utility aspect (kaolin and other clays as ceramic raw materials). All these aspcets occur repeatedly in Goethe's geological mineralogical writings, especially in connection wwith his frequent travels to Karlovy Vary and other Bohemian spas.
it is demonstrated that Goethe's geological-mineralogical wrintings give clear evidence of the fact that he as - in contrast to the idespread belief - well inclined to experimental work, e.g., in the field of petrology ("pyro-technische Versuche"), the ceramic furnace or kiln ("Töpferofen") being his main experimental equipment. His interest in Bohemian ceramic plants and their raw-material basis also reveal a practical side of Goethe's scientific thinking that is often (sometimes intentionally) ignored when his natural philosophy is considered
