   Gravity studies in the surroundings of the drill site of the German Continental Deep Drilling Program (KTB) in the Oberpfalz and western Bohemia including field surveys on the one hand and gravity data analyses on the other hand provided information, which enabled the interpretation of the morphogenesis, tectonic setting and intrusion dynamics of the late variscan granites at the northwestern margin of the Bohemian Massif. Volumes of more than 20.000 km3 of Late Variscan granites intruded the Moldanubian crust during the Carboniferous. The granites show steep- and flat-sided wedge-like plutons with batholithic to dyke-like shapes and basal depths ranging between 3-8 km. The gravity models revealed that these granites are largely buried in the host rocks, and that only the roof apophyses crop out at the surface.
   Furthermore, the subsurface granite shapes resulting from the 2.5D gravity modeling are greatly consistent with the granite-related transparent zones in the KTB/DEKORP-seismic displays. The simulation of the lithospheric underplating model of the Moldanubian and Bohemian terranes suggested the tectonic setting during intrusion of the granites in the northwestern Bohemian Massif. The generation and mobilisation of the magma was exerted by crustal thickening and vertical deformation in the lithospheric uplift zone, which governed the ascent of granitic melts in the upper crust. The effect of the oblique underplating in north to north-northeast direction induced dextral shear faulting, which provided tectonic cavities for the granite emplacement. The present north-northwest - south-southeast to north-south elongated granites reflect the orientation of the synmagmatic transtensional faults, which were formed due to relaxation of the shear zones
