Abstract (in english)
Dr. Jiří Vaněk, an outstanding Czech palaeontologist, will celebrate his sixtieth anniversary on February 4, 1999. He studied geology and palaeontology at Charle's University in Prague; most of his life, he devoted to the study of the Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian trilobites, namely of the families Lichidae, Harpetidae, Cheiruridae, Aulacopleuridae, Scutelluidae and Trinucleidae; he also described several new species and genera of other trilobite groups, often as a co-author of numerous papers. Besides trilobite systematics, he was interested in the biostratigraphy of the Early palaeozoic of the Barrandian area; significant are his papers dealing with the ecology, biostratigraphy, and biofacies in the Ordovician and Lower Devonian sequences in central Bohemia. In addition to the trilobites of the Barrandian area, he revised the Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian trilobites from Bolivia together with L. Branisa, A. Přibyl and I. Pek.
A paper, dealing with the palaeogeography of the Mediterranean region, including proposing Perunica as a separate microcontinent, was published by him in collaboration with V. Havlíček and O. Fatka
