Abstract (in english)
   A synthesis of malacologic records from the past 130 years permits a comparison of the Šumava (Bohemian Forest) Biosphere Reserve with the protected Landscape area of Blanský les situated in the SE marginal zone of the Šumava Region. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the progress that has been made in recent years in our knowledge of molluscan fauna of this area which enables its subdivision into several units, each with different molluscan communities reflecting local soil and vegetational conditions. The major conclusions may be summarized as follows: - (1) The main body of molluscan fauna lives in mixed mountain forests consiting of beech, fir and spruce, with admixture of elm, maples and ash. Discus ruderatus, Clausisilia cruciata and semilimax kotulae are characteristic of the mountain and upper mountain belts.
   In the latter, where the tree canopy is formed by Norway spruce with scattered rowan, the malacofauna consists only of a few tolerant species, whereas the malacocoenoses of mixed mountain forests are mostly rich in species, among them Vitrea subrimata, Macrogastra plicatula, Petasina unidentata, Causa holosericea, Aegopinella nitens and Carychnium tridentatum elongatum are characteristic of the whole Šumava Region. The mountain belt grades gently into the foothill area at the Bohemian side where the three mountain species are lacking and the submontane malacocoenoses are largely disturbed by human activities, particularly by spruce and Scotch pine planations which largely replaced the original mixed forests. - (2) The NW part of the Šumava Region is dominated by spruce forests on very acidic soils and thus is rather poor in molluscs. Large parts are overlain by extensive raised bogs which are mlacologically sterile.
   Nevertheless, from the Bavarian side two alpine species - Petasina edentula and Macrogastra badia sxtend to the area of Železná Ruda. By contrast, the SE part, beginning at the line Strážný-Kubova Huť-Vimperk is much richer in species, among which two Carpathian snails - Vestia turgida and Macrogastra tumida occur. At lower elevations as well as in the Blanský Les the demanding alpine-dinaric element Aegopis verticillus occurs in a number of places. The malacofauna includes here also thermophilous elements, such as Helix pomatia, Fructicola fruticum, Aegopinella minor or Discus perspectivus. In small limestone areas, particularly in the foothill zone of Blanský Les characteristic dry-grassland malacocoenoses with Pupilla muscorum, Truncatellina cylindrica, Cochlicopa lubricella, Xerolenta obvia and Chondrula trident are wide spread.
   - (3) The Blanský Les with numerous occurrences of Macrogastra tumida and Aegopis verticillus as well as of Helix pomatia, Aegopinella minor and fruticola fruticum living at high elevations has a specific position within the Šumava Region. - (4) This is particularly due to the fact that Blanský Les and its surroundings were settled since the Old Bronze Age.
