   Microbial activity in fresh and weathered material deposited in brown-coal mine spoil banks in the Sokolov Basin was studied using cultivation and biochemical tests. It has been found that the amounts of bacteria and actinomycetes oncrease during weathering of the Miocene Cypris Formation claystones, which cantain organic matter of prevailingly aliphatic type. In contrast, microbial activity is strongly reduced during weathering of the underlying coal clystone of the Main Seam Formation which contains organic matter of prevailing aromatic type. This is caused by the low pH of the sediments of the coal series as well as by the high production of phenol originating at the oxidation of aromatic-type organic matter. The amount of phenol in the weathered material containing organic matter of prevailing aliphatic type (Cypris Formation sediments) is minimal
