Abstract (in english)
On April 21, 1996 the life's carrer pf Prof. Ing. Otakar Kumpera, DrSc., a professor of the Institute of Geological Engineering of the Faculty of Mining and Geology of VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava, was closed unexpectedly. Prof. Kumpera was a distinguished scientist-geologist, author of fundamental studies, textbooks and geological maps, university teacher and long-term academic official of the VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava, member of many Czechoslovak and international geological organizations and institutions. In 1954 he began to act as assistant to Prof. Dr. Bohuslav Růžička at the Department of Geology and Paleontology. At this department he remained as a pedagogue for all his life. In 1962 he successfully defended his CSc. thesis, a theme being "A contribution to geology of the Upper Viseán in the Moravian-Silesian region of the Bohemian Massif" and was awarded a research degree of CSc. in geological-mineralogical sciences.
In 1964 after the submission of his habilitation thesis on the theme "Geology of the Devonian and Carboniferous along the northern rim of the Šternberk-Horní Benešov Zone" he was appointed as associated professor. In 1979 he defended his DrSc. thesis "Geology of the Lower Carboniferous of the Jeseníky Mts. block" and was conferred a degree of DrSc. in geological sciences. In 1981 he was appointed a professor in the field of historical and regional geology and mineralogy. His sphere of interest was very extensive. At the beginning of his research work, he had concentrated upon engineering-geological problems of the Kružberk-Ostrava water penstock built at that time, biostratigraphy of the Upper Paleozoic, later he shifted his attention to historical and regional geology and also structural geology and geotectonics.
Finally, he orientated towards various aspects of the Productive Carboniferous of the Upper Silesian Basin, primarily in connection with solving the major mine-geological problems and anomalous geomechanical events in the Ostrava-Karviná Coal District. Results of hi
