Abstract (in english)
During the 90's a rapid reduction of the water pollution in the Elbe river course has been achieved. The speed and extent of the changes that have taken place within this time period is unparalleled both in the Czech Republic and in most of the European states. The rapid decrease of the stress of the Elbe during the 1990's has been mainly due to a limitation of emissions from major industrial sources of point pollution in the upper and middle course in the years 1994-95. Opening of sewage works at the key polluting sources has resulted in a decrease of the stress of one to two quality classes in the majority of evaluated indicators. However the reduction of pollution level still continues, realized model prognosis shows that the further increase of water quality due to a reduction of emissions from point polluting sources will be generally low and of local impact.
Due to changing structure of pollution sources, where the non-point sources are playing a key role at the Elbe tributaies, it will be necessary to complexly evaluate the river basin area as a whole and to strengthen natural functions of river ecosystems, including their progressive revitalization
