Abstract (in english)
   Lignite-bearing tertiary sediments are very widespread in the northern part of the Czech Republic and extend across the border into NE Bavaria. In the environs of Schirnding claystones and limestones and lignites of these Tertiary series are currently quarried, forming the basis for the production of ceramics. The graben containing these late Tertiary sediments subsided into crystalline rocks, which were pervasivley altered during the early Tertiary. Siallitic weathering gave rise to a saprolite as much as 60 m thick, which based upon its phyllosilicate assemblage may be subdivided into a lower section with dominantly white mica and an upper section with kaolinite and illite-muscovite. Part of the "Pre-Lignite Beds" resting unconformably upon this weathering loam originated from reworking of the upper saprolite. Another part of this series is made up of gravelly channel deposits gullying into the loamy substrate.
   The "Lignite Beds" reflect deposition in an environment along a transect from mudflats at the basin edge through coal swamps into combustible shales deposited most basinward. Based upon palynological studies a lower to middle Miocene age of formation may be assigned to the coal bogs in the area under study. The passage from the the "Lignite Beds" up into the "Post-Lignite Beds" mirrors a transition from a wet into a dry fan with mudflats and minor fluvial deposits. Notably, volcaniclastic interbeds and altered fragments of alkali-olivine basalts are very widespread in the upper Miocene sedimentary rocks. The sequence of late Tertiary sedimentary rocks records aprograding fan with an intervening period of deposition under more quiescent conditions
