Abstract (in english)
Toxic trace elements and organic pollutants are accumulating in the soils of the urban area of Prague. The formation of contaminated land is a dynamic process potentially affecting groundwater, surface water, local air quality, agricultural production, ecosystems and human health. They originate mostly as products of burning of fossil fuels, industrial emissions and other sources. The concentration of the pollutants is very high at a number of sites. The atmosphere is systematically polluted by airborne dust and the trace elements are sorbed on the dust particles. A systematic sampling of the whole area was completed for the identification of polluted sites and was possible to determine the level of risk for population in cooperation with health-service authorities. The Czech Geological Survey together with the National Institute of Public Health are working on a project focussed on the problem
