Abstract (in english)
This new assessment of avalanche cadastre in the Czech part of the Krkonoše (Giant) Mts. is submitted only 7 years after the last evalution. Thanks to cooperation among the Krkonoše National Park Administration, the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic, and the Mountain Rescue Service of the Krkonoše Mts. a lot of information about 703 avalanches in the Czech part of the Krkonoše Mts. between years 1962-1998 has been compiled. Each avalanche area is, on the basis of 36-year-long observations, record and experinces of the avalanche specialist, Mr. Valerian Spusta explained by: - a description of its natural conditions; - photographs with superimposed indications of avalanche paths and their changes in the years 1962-1998; - a table of all avalanches fallen on each avalanche path; - descriptions of each avalanche based on international classification (De Quervain 1973).
We have introduced the codes A5 (cornice fall), K (height of crown-rupture-face), L (width of crown-rupture-face), M (width of avalanche), N (length of avalanche), O (depth of snow deposit) in addition to this classification. The 703 avalanches which heve been registered in the last 36 years, just on the Czech side of the Krkonoše Mts., is a surprisingly high number. It validates the conclusions of Prof. Jeník (Jeník 1958, 1961), that avalanches are an important landscape element in woodlands of the Central-European middle mountains. Furthermore, the destructive effects of avalanches is compensated by the resulting higher biodiversity on avalanche paths. In most of the Alpine and Scandinavia areas avalanche are considered to be a destructive phenomenon. But, in the Krkonoše Mts. avalanches have endangered no mountain chalets for example. If there is the danger of an avalanche, the corresponding areas are immediately closed to public attendance.
With regard to the high environemntal value of avalanche paths, most of them are designated to be within the 1. (core) zone of the KRNAP
