Abstract (in english)
It is well known, that zonation concept in stratigraphy is far from optimal state, and, it is necessary to discuss, whether advantages of biostratigraphic zonation can balance its drawbacks. Inevitably, every correlation, as a scientific operation, runs the risk of errors. Nevertheless, many geoscientists who do not themselves study the relevant conodonts set much trust in the accuracy of conodont correlations, believing that the assumedly elaborate conodont zonation warrants reliability. However, there will always be a divergence of opinions concerning both the science of conodont taxonomy and the formalisms of zonation. If any conodont zonation should be applied, we can recommend only the use of successive-appearance zonation mentioned above. If conditions do not permit such a procedure, we must rely only on detailed correlation of individual taxa that is much better to control than mechanical application of frequently erroneous and misleading conodont zonal scales.
